Grammarly Acquires Coda, Appoints New CEO to Lead Expansion into Productivity Tools
- by PulseNews
Grammarly has announced its acquisition of productivity startup Coda, a move designed to transform its AI assistant into a full-fledged “AI productivity platform.” As part of the deal, Coda’s CEO and co-founder, Shishir Mehrotra, will take over as the new CEO of Grammarly, succeeding Rahul Roy-Chowdhury, who will transition to an advisory role.
The financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed, but the integration of Coda’s AI tools and productivity products will significantly enhance Grammarly’s offerings. Grammarly users will soon benefit from new features, including generative AI chat and an expanded productivity suite aimed at improving efficiency in the workplace.
Mehrotra, a tech veteran with 25 years of experience, most notably as YouTube’s Chief Product Officer and CTO, outlined his vision for Grammarly in a blog post. He envisions a smarter, more connected AI assistant that could integrate with various systems like email, documents, CRMs, and project trackers, offering users personalized and context-aware assistance.
“Imagine if the Assistant not only gave amazing suggestions and refinements based on the writing it sees today but also had permission-aware connections into all of your other systems,” Mehrotra wrote.
In addition to integrating Coda’s capabilities into Grammarly’s existing AI platform, the company plans to enhance Coda’s flagship product, Coda Docs, by embedding the Grammarly Assistant. Over time, the goal is to combine the best features of both companies to create a comprehensive productivity ecosystem, incorporating generative AI features and hundreds of intelligent agents to streamline workflows.
Founded in 2009, Grammarly has become a widely-used AI assistant for writing, with over 40 million active users and a valuation of $13 billion. Coda, launched in 2014, was valued at $1.4 billion following its Series D funding round in 2021.
As AI-driven productivity tools continue to evolve, this acquisition positions Grammarly to better compete with other companies in the space, solidifying its place in the growing market for AI-powered writing and productivity solutions.
