WeTransfer Introduces Transfer Limits for Free Plan, Revamps Pricing Structure
WeTransfer has announced a significant change to its free plan, now restricting users to just 10 transfers per month. This new limitation is already in effect, as indicated on the company’s support page.
However, alongside the new transfer cap, WeTransfer is adding several features to enhance the free plan. These include an increased file transfer limit, which rises from 2GB to 3GB, as well as the addition of unlimited collaborative folders (known as portals) and reviews, plus password protection for all transfers. Additionally, the platform is removing the 5% fee previously charged for paid file transfers, a service that allowed users to sell files through the platform.
The company’s pricing model is also undergoing changes. In addition to the free plan, a new “WeTransfer Starter” plan has been introduced, priced at $6.99 per month. This plan includes the same features as the free plan but offers an increased file transfer size limit of 300GB.
Previously, WeTransfer offered Pro and Premium plans for $15 and $25 per month in the U.S., respectively. These benefits are now consolidated into a new “Ultimate” plan, priced at $25 per month.
This restructuring follows the company’s acquisition by Italy-based Bending Spoons in July. At the time of the acquisition, there was speculation about potential layoffs and pricing changes, both of which have now come to fruition. In September, Bending Spoons announced it would reduce WeTransfer’s workforce by 75%. This pricing shift mirrors a similar strategy employed by Bending Spoons after its acquisition of Evernote in 2022, where it first slashed the staff count before adjusting the app’s free offerings. Additionally, in August, WeTransfer altered the way file expiry dates function depending on the user’s subscription plan.
