Microsoft has purchased nearly 500,000 Nvidia Hopper chips this year, more than double the number bought by its closest competitors. According to the Financial Times, which cited data from tech consultancy Omdia, Microsoft acquired 485,000 of Nvidia’s flagship Hopper chips in 2024. In comparison, Meta purchased 224,000 of the same chips. Microsoft’s purchase this year more than tripled the number of Hopper chips it acquired in 2023.
In addition to these purchases, Microsoft is also developing its own custom AI chips, known as Maia, which were announced at the company’s Ignite conference in late 2023.
This year, Microsoft has significantly deepened its involvement in AI. The company strengthened its partnership with OpenAI and participated in its massive $6.6 billion funding round in October. Microsoft also signed a deal in September to reopen the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, securing all of its power for the next 20 years to support its data centers.
